Suffolk Beekeepers’ Association

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Reports
Tony Payne, the Chairman, reported that 2009 was a better year with reduced winter losses, but the prolonged drought created lower honey yields. With the upsurge in interest in beekeeping, branches are running a substantial number of beginners’ courses. He went on to congratulate two of our members who were elected to the BBKA Executive, David Bancalari, who will represent Suffolk amongst of other counties, and Dawn Girling, who was present at the meeting.
Keith Wilkinson, the Treasurer, stated that the finances were in a healthy state. The accounts are available for any member to inspect by arrangement.
Ian McQueen, the Show Secretary said even though the weather at the end of May was wet and windy, as usual, 89,000 people attended the 2009 Suffolk Show, and the large marquee was full all the time. The profit was slightly lower than previous years mainly due to a lack of honey to sell. He thanked all the helpers, without whom, the Show would not be the success it is.
Jeremy Quinlan, the Examinations Secretary, said that in 2009, 6 SBKA members took the Basic and all passed. 3 people took the Microscopy module. Jeremy became a Master Beekeeper by completing Module 7, Theory Certificate and advanced certificate in Bee Husbandry.
He concluded by saying it is not the exams which are important but the study - from this one learns lots of good things, so making it really worthwhile.
The new ADM delegate, Laurie Wiseman, gave a very comprehensive account of the proceedings at the ADM. He explained why he voted as he did, after listening to the discussions.

Tony Payne asked the members present, whether the AGM should be held in a central location each year, instead of taking it around the County. A lively debate ensued, with the feeling of the meeting being towards keeping the status quo.
